First Itinerary is a visit to the beautiful town of Montepulciano – an enchanted place clearly linked to Florence, which is reflected in its architecture. With its ancient Etruscan origins, Montepulciano is today famous for the very rich production of wine such as the Nobile of Montepulciano DOCG – appreciated all over the world.
Our visit begins at the beautiful church of San Biagio, constructed in the form of a Temple and a jewel of Renaissance architecture. From here we will go to the highest part of the town, Piazza Grande, surrounded by Renaissance buildings and the imposing Cathedral. We continue through the narrow medieval lanes to visit the 13 century church of Sant Agostino – later restored by Michelozzo,a famous Florentine architect.
Lets end our visit together exploring one of the most famous wineries in Montepulciano with a real underground labyrinth and of course, a taste of the famous wine.
The second itinerary includes a visit to Pienza – considered a jewel of Renaissance architecture! Thanks to the wishes of Pope Pius II, the destiny of the village was changed from an anonymous medieval village to one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
We will begin at one of the two intact gates of the medieval walls and continue through the streets lined with all manner of shops. Many shops are dedicated to the “king” of Pienza – its fabulous Pecorino cheese that has been produced here for centuries.
There is no better way to learn about pecorino than to taste or sample all the different varieties, pecorino preserved in ash, pecorino with truffles or perhaps with red chilis – which the shops are happy to let you do.
Of course, there are many architectural wonders to visit in this small village from the small Romanesque church of San Francesco to the main square with its beautiful Cathedral dedicated to Pope Pius II, who created it all. Your visit end on a panoramic terrace with a breathtaking view of the lovely Val dOrcia.
